I was treated to lunch at the Ferry Building on a recent Saturday. This place provides an excellent selection of high quality (albeit expensive) eats. If you haven’t been, it is definitely worth a visit. I’d suggest bringing friends so you can share and sample more things. Some of my favorites are the porchetta sandwich from Roli Roti, macaroons from Miette, cappuccino from Blue Bottle, almond croissant from Acme, and the chocolate milk from Cowgirl Creamery.
This is Roli Roti’s porchetta sandwich in the making. Pork loin wrapped in pork belly and cooked on a rotisserie…Ridiculously good.

DELICA is a Japanese deli and sushi bar. Everything is neat, tidy, and presented exceptionally well. This is their hijiki and soybean salad.

Bocolone serves thin slices of their cured meat sampler in a paper cone. Tasty salted pig parts.

Street lights as seen while heading toward the Embarcadero to walk off my lunch
Taken on a recent trip to New Orleans. Doreen Ketchens of Doreen’s Jazz New Orleans plays the clarinet during an exhibition in the French Quarter. The band is playing a traditional jazz funeral procession, which transitions from a somber dirge to a celebration of life after the deceased is “cut loose,” or buried. Here, Ketchens signals the end of the dirge with a commanding run on the clarinet, inviting onlookers to dance and celebrate as the “second line.”

Thoughts and observations taken during my last visit to the California Academy of Sciences.

Observing the animals, I kept thinking about what it might be like to live in a confined space with people gawking at me all day.

As I began to watch other visitors, I realized that from the animals’ perspective, they could think the same thing about us on the other side of the glass.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that we all subject ourselves to some form of confinement and scrutiny on a daily basis.

While the state of the animals seems inescapably obvious, the human experience is harder to be aware of.

What seems like freedom might actually be enslavement.

And giving up some freedoms might actually feel more free.
These little guys really fascinate me. I especially love the helicopter sound their wings make. I was pleased to learn that we have them all year round.

Meet Chris, Karen, and Ben. Chris is also a photographer and that always adds a bit of nerves and self-consciousness but that disappeared quickly as the session got under way. Ben was so happy to be out and about and we all had a great time. These were done on Ben’s first birthday at the Oakland Zoo.

I decided to tryout a few frames of film during the shoot and this last shot is a scan from film negative. I’m still getting accustomed to shooting a completely manual camera with no metering but am really enjoying the process.
Presenting the wedding of Lori and Gabe. They really put their relationship on display throughout the day, showing their love to be unrelenting, unashamed, and unapologetic. Love it.

March 6, 2012 - 9:58 pm - What a beautiful way to capture those beautiful moments. Great shots Donald!

There was instant film. This film was used in instant film cameras, like the polaroid SX-70, but was also available for use in regular film cameras by replacing the standard film holder with an instant film holder. This gave the photographer the ability to produce an instant print and check exposure before making an exposure on film. This process is the film analog to chimping on a digital lcd today. The following photographs are scans of Fuji FP-100c instant film on a camera that was generously lent to me by my cousin-in-law. Shooting film has really caused me to slow down and become more deliberate in my photography. I’m also enjoying composing with the square format.

Just wanted to share that one of my photos is featured on the California Academy of Sciences website and their downloadable poster. It is promoting their 2012 love life photo contest. This contest is a great excuse to grab your camera and head out to the academy. This year’s winners will get some cool new photography tech: a Lytro lightfield camera!

February 1, 2012 - 11:56 am - WOW! Congratulations Donald! That's the best photo on the page!
I am so pleased to present the wedding of Minjung and Donald Chew. Their personalities were so evident throughout every aspect of the day and it was a great privilege for me to be a part of their wedding. I absolutely loved how genuine they both are and how incredibly happy everyone was for them. Lake Tahoe made for a spectacular back drop and was exceptionally beautiful with clear October skies and an early snowfall visible on the mountain peaks. Congratulations again to the two of you and I have to say that Bruno Mars aint’ got nothing on Donald’s performance of Just the Way You Are
I’m trying a new slideshow format on my blog for this wedding. Let me know how you like it!
